It's on again in 2017.

20 - 22 JUNE 2017

Congratulations to the winners of Short Story Competition and the authors who were selected for publishing in the book which is available for purchase from here.

A huge thank you to the authors who travelled from as far as Sydney to be with us. Some drove for many hours avoiding the unexpected floods that played havoc. For rain fall levels that fell in June this year, you have to go back to 1910.

Special mention must be made of the intrepid adventurers who came from Coonamble to Dubbo by car, Dubbo to Sydney by plane, Sydney to Brisbane by plane , Brisbane to Barcaldine unexpectedly by plane and then by bus to Longreach and finally Longreach to Winton by hire car. Congratulations! That's how important it was for them not to miss the inaugural Outback Writers' Festival.

Jeff Close and Bente Moller did a magnificent job of catering. Bente's food was fantastic and Jeff's camp ovens provided a true outback experience.

Stand by for some great photos.

The Festival will be held at the iconic Winton Club.

Outback Writers' Festival Inc is a non profit incorporated association founded in 2015. The objectives of the Festival are:

  • To hold the festival annually in Winton.
  • To engage writers and readers who will continue to enjoy and advocate for more Australian stories.
  • To encourage the children of isolated and rural families and indigenous children to engage in more reading and writing of stories that they can associate with.
  • To promote the Outback as an important tourism destination for Australian and overseas visitors.
  • To tell the stories of the Outback as an iconic Australian cultural art form.
  • To tell the history of the Australian Outback, the indigenous people and their culture and the generations of settlers that opened this frontier as well as those who live in it today

The Festival supports the charity founded in the Outback for the people of the Outback - the Royal Flying Doctor Service.
