Winton
Winton is located in Central West Outback Queensland on the Landsborough Highway and there are three other towns, Opalton, Corfield and Middleton – all located in the vicinity.
There are so many ways to get to Winton regardless of whether you want to take the wheel, or sit back and enjoy the ride. Winton is fully accessibly via bitumen roads, or for the off-road enthusiasts there are plenty of back roads and little-known routes to be taken. Don’t forget when travelling in the Outback to take care, and check your mobile phone reception areas.

Travelling by Air

Rex Regional Express (REX) services Winton. There are flights on Tuesday and Thursday into Winton, on a loop departing from Townsville, which connect with QantasLink flights in Longreach. Please be aware when flying in to Winton that the Airport is located 5km from the town, so be sure to organise an airport pick up. Winton does not currently have a taxi service, so ask at your accommodation provider if they would be willing to provide a pick up service. An alternative to flying directly into Winton is to take the daily QantasLink flight from Brisbane to Longreach, where there are several hire car companies available including – Avis and Budget.

Travelling by Rail

If you are planning on leaving the car at home, you can travel on the Spirit of the Outback rail journey. Rail services depart Brisbane twice weekly and travel up the East Coast to Rockhampton, then travel inland to Longreach. From Longreach there is a coach connection to Winton. Westbound services depart Brisbane on Tuesdays and Saturdays. Eastbound Services depart Longreach on Mondays and Thursdays. The rail journey between Brisbane and Longreach travels 1325 km and takes 24 hours. Find out more about schedules, costs and train facilities at Qld Rail Travel.
