Categories and Conditions of Entry

Competition
The 2024 Short Story Competition is now open and entries are encouraged; all entries are to have an outback theme or setting. We have three categories for entry:

Categories of entry:
  • Open
  • Student, secondary school
  • Student, primary school
 
 
Open
 
  • open to any writer, each story to be a maximum of 3,000 words
  • a maximum of three entries per writer
  • entry fee for open is $40 for first entry, $25 for second or third
  • prize for open is $200 for first, $100 for second and $50 for third
  • the winning and selected stories are to be published in The Outback, Anthology of Short Stories, Vol 9
  • all open entrants receive a complimentary copy of the anthology; only one copy regardless of the number of entries
  • there’s no guarantee of inclusion of any story in the anthology
  • the entry fee for Open entitles access to all main program sessions but not workshops
  • Open competition entries will be invited to submit a proposal to be selected for an editing package to the value of $2,000 sponsored by Ian Mathieson, of iEdit, www.ianmathiesonediting.com


Student, secondary school

  • open to any high school student, each story to be a maximum of 600 words,
  • no entry fee
  • prize of $100 for first, $50 for second
  • none of the secondary student entries will be published in the anthology
      
Student, primary school

  • open to any primary school student, each story to be a maximum of 350 words
  • no entry fee
  • prize of $100 for first, $50 for second
  • none of the primary student entries will be published in the anthology
    
Conditions of Entry
 
  1. The story must have an Outback Australia theme or setting.
  2. The story is to be fictional, and not be under consideration for publication nor entered into another writing prize. Stories that have been published or won a writing prize will not be accepted.
  3. The story must be written by an individual author.
  4. The author must currently be a resident in Australia.
  5. The story is to be typed in Times New Roman 12pt Font using Microsoft Word. Please do not submit PDFs or Rich Text Files.
  6. Submission of an entry and payment is through the website outbackwritersfestival.com.au. The finished story must be submitted by 5:00pm on 26 April 2024.
  7. The judges’ decision is final and no correspondence will be entered into about the judgements or process.
  8. A selection of entries will be published in The 2024 Outback, Anthology of Short Stories, Vol 9. Copyright of stories remains with the author; by making an entry, the author grants permission for it to be reproduced in this years anthology. Royalties will not be paid to contributors included in the anthology.
  9. All Open Entry authors submitting a story will receive a free copy of the anthology.
  10. Each story must have the following information as its first page:
